Eye Exam Q&A

How often should I have an eye exam?

Even if you have perfect vision, you should have an eye exam at least every two years so the team at Eyes On Henry can monitor your ocular health and confirm that your vision is still 20/20.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, your prescription is only valid for 12 months, so you need an annual exam to keep your prescription current and allow your optometrist to assess your eye health.

Your eye doctor at Eyes On Henry may recommend more frequent eye exams if you have an eye disease like macular degeneration, cataracts, or glaucoma. Additionally, you may need more frequent eye exams as you age and your risk of eye disease increases.

What happens during an eye exam?

Once you register with the friendly office staff in the modern, welcoming office, your eye doctor calls you back to one of the themed exam rooms. The team at Eyes On Henry provides comprehensive eye exams for every member of your family — from kids to grandparents.

In addition to testing your visual acuity, they run a wide range of tests to assess your eye health and function. Some of the standard tests include:

  • Color blindness screening
  • Cover tests
  • Ocular motility
  • Depth perception
  • Retinoscopy
  • Slit-lamp exam
  • Tonometry (glaucoma test)

If you need a prescription for corrective lenses, your doctor uses a refraction test to identify your specific prescription. Additionally, they may dilate your pupils or use a special camera to examine and scan your retina for signs of eye diseases.

After your eye exam, if you have a new prescription, you meet with the friendly opticians at Eyes On Henry to select new eyeglass frames, lenses, or contact lenses.

With their expertise, the team can assess your face shape and offer the most flattering frames and best lenses based on your individual needs.

Why do I need an eye exam?

Eye diseases, like many other health conditions, don’t usually cause symptoms in their early stages. A routine eye exam, allows your eye doctor to check for signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts before you notice symptoms or vision changes.

When your optometrist diagnoses an eye disease early, they can start treatment immediately to restore your eye health and prevent blindness.

Call Eyes On Henry or make an appointment online today if you or any member of your family need an eye exam.
