Dry Eyes

Important Information about Dry Eye Syndrome from Our Spartanburg Eye Doctor

Does one or both of your eyes feel dry and itchy? You might have dry eye. Dry eye is a condition where your eyes do not produce enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish your eyes. Our optometrist in Spartanburg, SC, can diagnose dry eye syndrome and recommend treatment for dry eyes.

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears – or produces tears of low quality – to keep the eyes healthy. Special glands in the eyes produce tears. Every time you blink, the tears wash over the clear outer surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears evaporate but excess tears drain into tiny drain holes in the eyelids, known as tear ducts.

Tears contain more than water. In fact, tears have three main layers. The outer layer contains oil that prevents the water inside tears from evaporating too quickly. The middle layer contains fluids and proteins that lubricate and nourish your eye. The inside layer has mucus that keeps your eyes wet.

Dry eye can happen when the tear glands do not produce enough tears. Dry eye syndrome can also happen if the tears are too watery and do not contain enough oil, as this allows the tears to evaporate too fast.

Our Spartanburg Optometrist Diagnoses and Treats Dry Eye

While dry eye may not seem serious at first glance, untreated dry eye can lead to eye inflammation, abrasion of the corneal surface, corneal ulcer and further problems with your vision.

Diagnosis of dry eye includes an examination of the eyes and eyelids, measurement of tear production and evaluation of the cornea with a bright light. Treatment for dry eye usually involves the use of artificial tears, conserving tears by blocking the tear ducts, or medicines to increase the production of tears.
