More people than ever before are having LASIK surgery. LASIK makes it possible for you to get rid of your glasses and contact lenses and still see correctly. The procedure is non-invasive, painless, and very quick. By the time you are healed, wearing glasses or contacts will be a thing of the past. If you are thinking about having LASIK surgery performed, you should understand that not everyone will be a good candidate. Our experts in optometry at Eyes on Henry in Spartanburg can help determine if the procedure is right for you.
For LASIK to be successful, your eyes will need to have reached maturity. This typically occurs when you are 18 years old. Most eye doctors won't perform the surgery any earlier than this.
Your Eyeglass Prescription
If you are going to be a good candidate for LASIK, your prescription needs to fit into the acceptable range. If you are nearsighted, your prescription can be no higher than -11.00. If you are farsighted, your prescription can be no higher than +5.00. Finally, if you have astigmatism, your prescription can be no higher than 5.00 D.
The Health of Your Eyes
In order to be a good candidate for LASIK, your eyes need to be healthy and free of disease. If you are suffering from glaucoma, cataracts, or age-related macular degeneration, you wouldn't be a good candidate. If you have chronic dry eye syndrome, LASIK wouldn't be a good option for you.
Your Overall Health
There are certain medical conditions that can make you a poor candidate for LASIK. If you are suffering from diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or another auto-immune disease, this procedure won't be an option for you. If you are pregnant or nursing, our optometrist will suggest that you wait to have the procedure done.
